Is anyone using the 10lb see-thru tanks advertised to the right in their dual-tank propane locker? I want to make sure it fits before I buy a couple.

Call Dave at SBO and he will give you the measurements. They worked fine on my buddies H'376.

I work a lot with flammable chemicals as a design engineer. One of the biggest hazards with storing these chemicals is protecting the storage container from rupture if a fire is fueled from a leak or spill. We never use plastic containers or piping because plastic can melt or weaken when exposed to extreme heat. I would be leary of using a transparent or translucent plastic propane container on a boat, even if is is rated for the storage pressure.

Quick note on these tanks.. when they started showing up from Europe a few years ago, the NFPA (Natnl Fire Protection Association) did a lot of tests on them thinking that they were going to be unsafe.. The tests show that they are more safe because they open under lower pressure in a flame and do not cause as much of a conflagration as steel tanks do.. It is one of those counterintuitive things.. that happens sometimes with LPG and the cold temperatures it goes to when released quickly. (around -20F for propane) There are a couple of interesting papers detailing the tests on the internet. .. I am going to go to one of the 10# ones as soon as the existing steel tank empties.

Hey, Jim,
I had the same thought-and measured the standard 356 10lb tank-they won't fit, taller and wider? than the alum tank, but it's hard to tell if the well actually might hold it-I'll try mocking one up this weekend if I can.

I purchased a 10# fiberglass propane tank on-line from a company in Ohio. It fits into the aft propane locker on my H386 just fine. I even took the next step and added a "T" sold by Magna BBQs so I could use the propane tank to supply the galley as well at the outdoor BBQ on the rails. Works great. And I agree with comment above regarding the NFPA which say these tanks are much safer than the steel tanks. Do a Google search and read the NFPA reports yourselves. In addition, a quick glance and you know immediately how much fuel you have. It's a no-brainer for me.

I have a 17# Fiberglass see thru LP Tank mounted on my stern rail (35.5 Hunter Legend) "No available space to install a locker with a low point drain". If you go to the manufacturers site and see how they tested the integrity of these containers you would be impressed. They have video of the tank siting atop a turkey fryer flame till it fails, then they did the same test with a steel cylinder BLEVE boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion. The fiberglass tank is much safer in this example only a 30 sec. flare up no explosion.

Roy,

I have a friend that just returned from his boat in Panama and he has had a problem with your Magna setup. It seems there is a chemical in the propane used in the big tanks that is not in the little bottles and the chemical corrodes the little Blue pressure regulators. He went through three Blue regulators in a couple of months. He called Magna and they know about the problem and can give you the fix needed. If I remember it correctly the fix is to install a regulator like the one that goes to the stove in the boat. Call Magna and their engineers will give you the real deal.

Hope that this save you some problems.

Re: Will they fit in the H356

HI Jim,
well, my measurements last year were correct. the diameters ok but the H356 well is only 13" deep, counting the ring on the bottom of the tank. the new plastic tanks are 17" plus tall

I now have them and will try them.

The 44DS well is deeper, the main issue for me is if the retaining ring will fit over the top. Given that I went ahead and ordered a couple, I'll figure that out. If it does't work, it shouldn't be too difficult to modify the retaining rings.

Bummer

Would have liked it to fit in the H356 locker. Getting real tired of having to chase the rust on the bottom of the tank.

Re: Bummer

yea, me too. would hate to invest in a second metal tank if the plastic ones would work..... I use rust converter on the bottom of mine and it stops the rust.

I do use the See-Thru Propane lockers on my 2008 H41. I did have to modify my locker. Had to make it deeper. No more rust and a year or more of propane. Bought the tanks on this site.

Just to follow up, they fit in the locker on the 44DS, the only change I had to do was modify the "rings" that hold them in. I simply cut the ends so I could bend them out to fit around the top of the cylinders.
