using a spinnaker pole as a whisker pole

I have a 1976 standard rig Catalina 27 with an 11' spinnaker pole. I know that a whisker pole extents out and a Spinnaker pole is solid but is there any reason that a spinnaker pole can't be used for downwind sailing with a genny?

I frequently use my spin pole on the genoa when sailing downwind. It's particularly useful if you have an inexperienced helmsman.

I say as long as you can trim the sail the way you want then go for it

Just make sure...

If you use the spinnaker pole as a whisker pole, just make sure that it doesn't happen duing a competition where cross use is prohibited, like in one design racing.
