Would anybody know a source for used sailboat wheel steering pedestals for a mid-size sailboat? I've asked and read your opinions on converting my Mac 26S Classic and have decided to do it, but want to go with a used one instead of a new Edson kit if possible. Sorry for asking on the chat-forums, but have tried & fail in looking elsewhere. Kevin B.

Go to www.ebay.com and then search for "edson pedestal" and you will find a couple for sale.

Look for Bob Todd

He has mentioned in the past that he has access to several. Search archives here for his messages and you'll find him. He's been a good source of advice, and offer of parts to me in the past.

to convert or...

Kevin; why bother with that? Sell this one, and get something with a wheel. Conversions have a habit of costing way more than planned and seldom work out as well as a factory built one. JMTC

I converted....

I converted tiller to wheel on my Islander 30. I bought a used pedestal. It came with some misc. pieces, some of which were useful, some were not. The chain was good, the wire had been cut so I replaced it with wire from an industrial supplier. Edsons catalogue is pretty good and if you look carefully, you can buy the specialized custom parts from them, and the rest can be gotten on the market for about 1/2 price. Things like wire, take up eyes, thimbles, clamps, bolts, etc. can be found elsewhere much cheaper. There are deals to be had if you take the time to look. If you are handy, it is not a difficult project but you do need to use skills that you developed elsewhere to make it work. The compass was cloudy and had been submerged somewheres along the line. I took it apart, cleaned it and replaced the fluid for less that $20 and it is fine. Edson has a site that lists most boats and what is needed for the conversion. Rick

Thanks!

Thanks everybody for the advice! I didn't think of E-bay, so I have my bid in on a used Edson pedestal. Although I'm tempted to sell and buy a boat already with wheel steering, I love my red, trailerable sailboat and once I've converted it will have the perfect boat for me since I will trailer it between Houston and Kennebunkport, Maine each fall/spring. Thanks again and wish me luck. Kevin B.
