I saw used Standing rigging for sale and I was wondering if this sounds like a super bad idea or is it just me. I admit I was tempted for $40 to pickup and have as a backup.

Did they replace because of mast coming down,Wire braking at terminals? Bad idea.

Interesting idea. Usually the wire problems are at or near the terminals. If the used wire is longer than required you could cut off the bad ends. We do know that there is wire stretch and wear along the whole length. Is it enough to compromise the strength? I would want to hear more from some of our metallurgical experts.

Can you examine it? How much cheaper is it than new wire? I bought a new forestay wire from Pyachts, I think it was maybe about $35 - If I recall, spec is 5/32 stainless, and it is a bit under $1/foot. How much wire do you get?

It included the stainless 4 shrouds 16' long. The turnbuckle and a tang for attaching to the mast. Fittings are swagged to the 1/8" cable. It was taken from a scrapped 23.

I have to wonder if the state side manufactured rigging supplied 10-20yrs ago on most production boats wasn't a higher quality than what is found from most Asian suppliers today. I can't imagine replacing our rigging with something used but there are also many stories cropping up regarding new Chinese stainless pins, plates, shackles, bolts and anchor line/chain that are significantly weaker than their older American counter parts.

Maybe sizing up has merit whether it's from overseas or not but used would only be some sort of emergency backup for me. Cheap paper plates, cheap beer or maybe even cheap used sails, but standing rigging(or ground tackle) failure has such high potential to be chaos to a crew/boat that it's unthinkable.

Here's a link to check out subtle signs of imminent failure. http://www.dixielandmarine.com/yachts/DLrigprob.html

and a pic of chaos and a boat rather hard aground :)

Good luck Mike
