Used sails

I've been looking at buying a cruising spinnaker for my 285 and came across a company out of Florida called "Atlantic Sail Traders". Seems like they have quite an inventory of used sails. In my case I'm not sure what luff "range" I can get away with in a used sail. The "I" dimension on a Hunter 285 is 37'-4". If you use a cruising spinnaker on your 285, what size is your sail? I know nothing beats a sail made just for your boat but "Atlantic Sail Traders" seem to have some good deals. They're web site is at http://www.usedsails.com/

Bob: I, too, own a 28.5 (also currently located in Havre de Grace!), but I don't have a cruising spinnaker. It would seem to me that the luff dimension for the spinnaker and a full sized genoa would probably be the same. In my case, that is 36'-2". The difference between the "I" dimension and the actual sail's luff is, of course, the space needed to connect to the tack and head. So...it would be hard to see how you could go wrong by much by searching for a used sail with a max luff of 36'. Hope this helps. Also, most used sail lofts will let you hoist a sail (but not use it) and allow you to return it if it doesn't fit. Finally, there a couple of new sail lofts around Havre de Grace and they may have made a cruising spinnaker for a 28.5. It may be worth a call to one of them and inquire about luff dimensions.

try e-bay

frequently e-bay has spinakers and other sails for sail sometimes only used a few times by the hardcore racers.

Tidewater, Warren?

Are you in Tidewater Marina? Yes, I know of the couple of sail lofts in town. In fact, I have my sails over at Ullman where they were cleaned, repaired and stored for the winter. If you have a 285 you might also be interested in seeing my photos and copy about the bow roller I put on the boat. Just go to the forums drop down menu, click onto photo/project forums and then bow plate. See you on the bay soon!

Missed by $9

I missed a very nice one by $9 a few weeks ago! Since then I subscribed to bidnapper and have had a lot of success in getting snatch blocks at a very good price.

Have you tried Bacon's in Annapolis? I also think you would be 'short sheeting' yourself with a luff of only 36', unless you intend to tack it to the bow with a pennant to get it over the pulpit. Check with Ulmer /Skelley in Havre DeGrace. I don't know if they can help you with used sails, but they've made several sails for 28.5s.

Spinnaker Pole lift/topper

Hey fellow 28.5 owners.... what size spinnaker pole are you guys using for the 28.5 and does yours have a topper or lifter to keep the pole up? I'm an old dighny racer and I'm confused if "big boats" use those. My 28.5 has a spinnaker and the track for a pole but no type of lifter for it.

Spinnaker Pole

The standard Spinnaker Pole would be the length of your 'J' dimension or 12'-1". A race rigged spinnaker boat would have a pole lift and down haul to position the height of the pole. I run non-spinnaker and use a whisker pole on a sliding fitting on a mast mounted track and don't feel I need a pole lift or down haul to use a whisker pole with my 155% Genoa when running wing and wing. A bargin, Stu...a bargin

Yes Stu I know about Ulmer /Skelley, thanks for the tip. I had my sails cleaned, repaired and stored there this winter. I've already gotten a "ball park" price for a cruising spinnaker from them of around $1,200, which is about right BUT I was looking for that bargin price! :) Atlantic Sail Traders does have used sails but they're in Florida. I've heard of Bacon's too and I've been on there web site although not to their location yet. Not in a hurry to get a cruising spinnaker and taking my time to find the best deal and fit for my 285. Thanks again for the info!

For Bob: Tidewater, et al

Bob: Yes, I'm at Tidewater. I plan to sail the boat south to Herrington Harbour around May 1st. Since I have never sailed into, or out of, Havre de Grace (it looks to be a very well-marked eye-ball navigation channel) would like your views about what to watch out for. Please email me if so inclined: baybyter@aol.com

I'm in Tidewater also

and you are correct about the channel. 35 minutes later and being bounced around from the power boats and dodging the barges, you are finally able to raise the sails. What other marinas further south are sailboat friendly?
