Used sails for 27'...

Another novice question... how exact do the measurements have to be for the sails to fit/work? I have found some used sails and the I, J, P and E are close but not exact...real good price and I hate to pass them up.
Thanks!

As a rule, the JIPE numbers of the sail can be smaller, but not bigger than the boats numbers.
Slightly smaller is fine.

Sail fits

GSFaulk, it's a perfectly sensible question. One problem with us Cherubini-boat owners is that my dad drew tall rigs-- so it's downright tough trying to find other boats' sails that will work. Either they're way too long in the foot or they're way too short on the hoist.

As a rule, jibs are easier to fit. Personally I don't care for decksweeper headsails anyway; so flying something a little too short, on a pennant (at the tack) of about 12" or so, is perfectly fine with me. A jib from some older design (like a Columbia 26, for example) will serve well as a 125- or 135-percent genoa flown on a pennant. EBay is a good source for these things, provided you remember caveat emptor.

Mainsails are tougher, because both the H25 and H27 have what were, in the 1970s, classified as high-aspect rigs. My E (foot) is only 8 feet and the P (hoist) is 25 feet. Most 1970s-1980s boats are much stubbier and fuller than that. So good luck finding something!

Never overlook the feasibility of acquiring something that's a close fit and having it cut down and fitted to your boat. Any competent sailmaker can do this.

I recommend Sailwarehouse (http://thesailwarehouse.com/cgi-bin/web_store.cgi?page=storeframe.html&cart_id=) for new sails, if you need a primary for serious sailing. Their prices are good and their quality is as good as anyone else's. They build to the OEM spec of the boat, not some local guy's measurements, so what you get from them is as close to 'factory original' as you can get. The big names such as Doyle and North (and anyone not in possession of original John E Cherubini sail plans) have lost a little in customer-service sensitivity; so I have no scruple about ordering from a well-established online service located in the US.

Sailwarehouse also provide definitive (sailmakers') measurements for your boat's rig. Look it up, study and learn the diagram and the use of the letter codes, and log your boat's data for future reference. Their providing this vital info is reason enough for me to buy from them.
