I have located a few Beneteau's (used) that are from Ireland. Would possibly consider buying and sailing it back to NY. Looking to hear from others who have purchased a vessel from Europe and sailed it home. Some questions 1. Taxes/duty fees. 2. Electric changes that have to be made to meet US standards. 3. Any information about qood brokers in Ireland. 4. Currency exchange? What is today rate compared to the US? 5. Am I crazy? Thanks

The Euro
The Euro (European Basic Currency system for participants, Ireland belongs to this) is continuing to increase in value against the US dollar. It is around $1.33EU = $1.00US, today. When I first went there in 2002 it's value was about $1.05EU = $1.00US just at the time that the Euro system was introduced/started. Also, Keep in mind that their sailing season is about 1 month longer than New England, so the boats may have a bit more usage. I really can't offer any answers to the other questions. There are lots of scams going on. I'm sure that you should be able to find a boat to your liking here in the USA. I realize you have the desire to sail across the atlantic, but you're taking a financial risk here.

Thanks to all on my question. Ireland may not be the best location to purchase a vessel. Seems the currency exchange may not be the best value. As far as sailing from Ireland to NY, not to worry. With over 7 years of sailing and racing (1000+ hrs on the water in all kinds of conditions) I would consider the Atlantic passage are rather long and boring trip. I am sure that there would be some pretty tough conditions but nothing that a serious well experienced crew could not handle. Thanks to all!
