Just bought a 1983 Catalina 30 Tall. 1. Needs new main sail. Any ideas on where I might find a good one? 2.Also she has wooden spreaders. Should they be replaced? Thanks, Bryan

Used Sails

Bryan, I am in the same boat ('cept mine's a SR) and I need a new sail & spreaders. You can call Catalina for the aluminum spreader upgrade. They are supposed to be a bolt in replacement (no drilling needed) but I suspect that getting the old screws out of the mast might be a challenge. I think the spreader kit (which includes new spreaders, base, tips & hardware) was around $260. For used sails, check out the link below. I haven't called them yet, but they seem to have a big inventory & a decent way to rate their condition. If you perform a search on Yahoo for "Used Sails" you'll get at least 6+ other companies, maybe one will be in your area. Good luck!

Another used sail loft

Another place to look is: www.bacon-sails.com I have not used them, but I've been told by several people who have that their quality indications (eg, good, fair, etc) are very accurate, and these people have had good experiences. Good luck! PS: Bacon are based in Annapolis.

New or used?

There are lots of good lofts that can make up new sails, including Doyle which can be contacted through this site. With used sails you're getting into muddier water. Companies may rate their sails differently, so just be cautious. In addition to the ones listed above, check out Minney's Sails (look it up on Google). LaDonna
