Used inflatables

I was at the Toronto boat show the other day. I stumbled upon a broker selling high end Caribe used inflatables. She was listing one 20 footer with a steering station, bimini, roll bar, and trailer for $40k. The listing sheet claimed the whole package would cost $60k new. I find this very hard to beleive. My offshore cruising sailboat cost me less than $60k. The tubes on this boat are going to rot away in 15 years or so. Why would anyone pay this money for an inflatable?

For business, exploration or military purposes.

The tubes may rot but they can be replaced. Perhaps some wealthy guy may use one as dingui but that would be the exception. Went to the Ft. Lauderdale power boat show and judjing from the Mega Yachts on display there was not surprised to see the big inflatables being displayed as pleasure vesssels. These boats can be economically transported around the world, deployed rather quickly and can do 60 MPH in 2 ft of water. Hardly a job description for a cruising sailboat.

The usefulness of these boats in not in dispute. it is the price. 60,000 for a twenty foot anything seems outrageous to me. When one considers that the tubes will deteriorate over 10 years - why pay this money for something that is guaranteed to rot away?

Must be valued against the old US dollar and not the new one, hopefully! Too expensive!

There's a 2004 on yacht world for $24,999. Unless there was something special about the model you were referred to I'd say the broker was a bit out of line with the price.

There are many reasons for an inflatable.

Higgs: While i agree that $60k seems unreasonable, and I agree that they seem overpriced there are reasons for using inflatables vs other rigid vessels. They consume less fuel, carry more weight, go faster and are almost unsinkable. The USCG uses these things in our area as their preferred small craft. They are equiped with fixed mount machine guns, a few of hundred horse power and a fairly large crew that goes like hell. They can pull right up next to your vessel without damage to your hull. I have had my Caribe and leave it infalted year round and in the water. I purchased it new in 1994. It still works well even though it is showing it's age. I will probably find out about doing some repairs in the coming year and will report on the costs.
