Phil has done a great job with this site yet one feature that goes way under used, IMHO, is the:

Used Gear Classified Section

For the amount of users this site has the used gear classified section is WAY underutilized..

Please take a moment to go through your old no longer being used gear and post a FREE ad.. You can then buy more stuff with all the money you made selling your old stuff....!!!:D:D

Craigslist is full of scammers and slime balls and eBay is called FleaBay for a reason. Buy from fellow sailors!!

C'mon we should be able to get 20+ new ads up by tomorrow.... Do your part......

Centerline and I were emailing just yesterday as we concluded a deal. We thought it would be great to have something here where we could post a list of boating "stuff" (NOT JUNK) for sale. List a contact means, city, and just a short note in a running list on each piece you had: "shackle, 5/16"; "winch Lewmar 30", etc. no other descriptions, just short and sweet. Inquiries would be done via email, not on the listing thread.

No boats, please. Prices under a certain amount, otherwise they would be on the "For Sale" thread.

Maybe like this:
(Email address), Annapolis MD.
Sail headboard shackle, 5/16 pins.
Winch, Lewmar 30.
Stanchions, 4 30".
Anchor, danforth, 20 pounds.
Spud bazooka.
etc.

If people do this.....put a price in the ad. I never slow down to look at ANY ad that doesn't put some idea of what it costs.

Unfortunately there will never be a For Sale Thread on SBO.... This is what the classified section was built for. Any hint of something for sale in the forums is Nuked in short order, just one of Phil's "hot buttons"...

Maine,
Maybe you should consider renaming the "Digital Dumpster Dive" section to something akin to "Gently Used Equipment For Sale"
The dumpster dive tag can be misleading. Just a thought

I have three sails in my shed from boats I no longer own... but my yard is covered in snow and slush so I can roll them out for measures... but I will contribute as soon as I get a good-weather weekend.

Maybe you should consider renaming the "Digital Dumpster Dive"
Warren Milberg came up with the idea and the name, which I like, but you do make a point. I renamed it to Digital Dumpster Dive - FREE Gear. It will take me a few days to get that into the nav everywhere.

I do have a "thing" about classified ads in the forums. I don't like it when they show up in search results and I especially don't like it when they get mixed into the site content. I just find it annoying.

It seems to me that a true classified application is better because it can be searched separately, has a more task-appropriate display, and can be managed differently than a forum. That said, if everyone overwhelming wants the gear classifieds in a forum format, that can be done easily enough.

And thanks, Rodd, for the reminder! Even I forget that feature is here sometimes. :)

you are to kind Phil.....

I find it downright Rude,Selfish,Obnoxious, and a slap in the host's face..especially when the host has provided a place to sell your trash and treasures...that act of generosity is as good as it gets ....thanks SBO for being such a gracious host and keep up the good work ...i report as much of those for sail things in the thread as i see and or remind the post that they need to post it in the classified ads...i don't single anyone out because of who they are....

I'm going to list 6000 cubic yards of fantastic, fresh snow. It's only $20 but you have to cart it away yourself.

No Selling in Forum!

I, too am against any classified ads in the forum. There are plenty of places for that. If we allow classified ads in the form it will take about 5 minutes for them to completely take over. It will not just be folks trying to sell their stuff. It will be retailers, brokers, all and everyone disguising themselves as "Bob from Santa Cruz" selling his stuff. No Selling on the Forum!

When my boat sells...

and the included content transferred to the new owner, I will be listing goodies (not trash!) that won't be included in the sale that were being saved for the next boat, now not an option.

Thanks to Phil for the place to do so and to Maine Sail for the reminder!

Ham Radio forums have "Swap Meets". We as hams loved to go to swap meets and look for used/new gear all the time. On the QRZ.COM site is a Swap Meet in forum style. One of the rules is all "ads" on the swap meet must contain a photo with the sellers Amateur Call. In this case, I would say that if there was a "Boater Swap Meet" then all items listed must have the boat name and maybe registration number. Just a thought.

So with that... Anyone got a whisker pole? :D LOL (Someone "borrowed" mine)

I completely agree... and I also agree with Maine Sail that the "used gear for sale" section is very underutilized... I have been using it since I became a member of the site, wanting to buy as well as listing things for sale... but if no one looks at what we are selling or never lists what they have to sell, then it is futile for those of us that are trying:cry:... but we still keep listing, looking and hoping:D

The new home page and navigation scheme _should_ help people find the gear ads. Coming very soon.

I have the SBO app on my iPad and iPhone. I cannot find the classified section on the app. I can login using the Internet to find it but not thru the app.
