All you people that are lucky enough to upgrade all your electronics.... Anyhow, I'm looking for a decent used guage to plug into the existing depth guage bulkhead mount. The boat currently has what I suspect are the original knot and depth meters--Kenyon, a company no-longer in existence.... Problem is, most guages are standardized to 2 1/2, 2 3/8 or so mounting holes; my current (basically useless) guages are 4 or so inches in diameter. And without resorting to painstaking glass work, I'm stuck with these mounting holes. Does anyone know of some decent guages that will fit this sized opening? I just need depth and/or knots, not fishfinder or GPS or anything like that. Regards, Adam

Standard Horizon used to make a 4" DS

I looked at it because it matched my knotmeter. WM is not carrying it now and I can't find it on the Standard Horizon site but you might be able to find one in a store.

Try this site, for new instruments. I bought from them about a year ago - a knotmeter. www.srinstruments.com

Depth

Adam, The last of the 4" round flush display format was the Standard Horizon. Unfortunately they no longer manufacture basic sailing instruments. They were available as recently as last fall so you may very likely find some on the shelf somewhere. Watch ebay for stock liquidations, etc. Jon

Sailing instruments

Moore Electronics, still makes them, and Defender. Com sells them. They are priced right too.

replacement

Hey, Why not cover the existing holes with a piece of teak or something? You could mount new instruments in the teak, or somewhere else. FYI, I would buy a cheap fishfinder for $100 instead of just a depth gauge. Barry

Try Ebay or go a Google Search

Adam, I had the same problem replacing my DataMarine wind/speed, Knot meter and Depth units - some worked some didn't and I didn't want to go through the hassel of replacing all of them and then dealing with the holes like you are. I purchased one unit on eBay and then found a company that rebuild and sells refurbished units to replace the other. Just check eBay and then do a google search and see what comes up. Good luck - Rob

I have tried EBay...

..for awhile now. PIA. Got sorta "caveat emptored" twice on guages. Not too big a deal since I s'pose I can resell them, but I don't want watching Ebay to become a full-time job. And hey, I like EBay.... Anyhow,I also thought of the teak panel option, and may still go with that or a nice white piece of starboard even. The only problem with the panel part is that I may have to enlarge the hull-liner inside to access the backs of the instruments. Plus, I hate drilling/enlarging holes in the glass. Upsets my, somehwhat odd, apprehensions....

Program a notification on Ebay

You can program eBay to notify you via email if a listing appears.

buying used, covering holes

Since you live on the coast there are probably many small marine electronics shops in your area specializing in refurbishing instruments. You can often find their business cards posted on your marina bulletin boards, West Marine store bulletin boards, or advertisements in regional sailing magazines. They may be able to fix your existing instruments, or if you buy something on eBay that doesn't quite work, you can bring it to them. I believe it was around $180 to get a digital depth finder refurbished at a place I dealt with a couple of years ago. As for covering holes, it has to be admitted that most of us wouldn't have put our instruments where we found them when we bought our used boats. One clever way of dealing with coach roof coaming holes is to insert one of the new solar-powered Nicro vents in the hole and mount instruments somewhere else, such as on the pedestal or on a rail over the Companionway hatch. Putting one of the small Bomar or similar screw-out access plates in the hole seals it and can look fashionably non-functional; or you can use one of the see-through acces plates and consider it a porthole. You could go whole hog and carve out a large hole for a full-sized port if you like the light. I saw a flat sealing plate in one catalog but I don't know who makes it.

depth guage

Adam:We have an unused (still in the box) Uniden depth guage which is available for the less than what we paid for it ( under $80). You would still have to deal with the larger hole from your old installation (our indicator is @ 1/4 inches diameter) but the price can't be beat. It has an adjustable depth shallow water alarm. if you are interested e-mail me at wjssr@earthlink.net
