I'm considering getting a new to me boat, and am looking at a few now. The one at the top of the list at the moment is an '87 30'C&C MKII. I'll be moving from a '72 Catalina 27. Will I notice much difference? Three feet doesn't sound like much, but the boat seems a lot bigger. Are there any specific things I should be aware of? I will get a survey if I move forward, so what I'm really looking for is some ideas and advice on what I might look for during a preliminary look-see. I've never had a diesel, pressure water, starting batteries, holding tanks, etc. Where do I start? One more point, or question: This model has the traveler/mainsheet mounted at the base of the companionway. Seems to me this would be in the way of the crew (or visa-versa) during most points of sale..true? Is it a problem? I can't picture trimming the main from behind the wheel when the sheet is at the companionway. Sorry, one more: I will be using this for cruising rather than racing, so I would like to install some sort of sunshade or bimini. Is this possible with mid boom sheeting?

C&C 30

It's an excelent boat, well built, but get a survey done due to it's age. Look at exhaust system thoroughly particularly if it's been salt water sailed. Hopefully the original sails and halyards have been replaced, if not you should not expect them to last much longer. The bridge deck main sheet can easily be single handled from the wheel and you can upgrade a 3:1 traveler purchase to 4:1 fairly easily. A bimini of about 5'-6" long by 6'wide should be possible, but watch for clearance to winch handles. She shouldn't be as tender as your Catalina 27 and should feel 'bigger' going to weather. If you do decide to race she can do well with typical equipment upgrades; folding prop, good #1 Genoa & Main. Enjoy!

The Survey should answer most of your questions

with regard to holding tanks, engine etc...You can have a dodger/bimini/sunshade custom made to just about any boat. Just contact a reputable canvas shop and you should have no problem. The C&C is a nice boat. Good luck!

homework

suggest reading "Inspecting the Aging Sailboat" by Don Casey as quick way to aid evaluation of used boat and augment the survey. Makes you aware of lots of details (good and bad) outside the surveyor's list.

Check boat reviews

In addition to the excellent suggestions already made, take a look at Practical Sailor or Spinsheet.com--both offer used boat reviews, and may have the boats you're considering. Look around for owners associations for the brands--some excellent ones out there with a lot of experience with their boats. Doing these two things will help you guide your surveyor--give them specific things to look at, etc. We've had a very good experience with buying our '67 Alberg--best of luck! Bill

Consider a Catalina 30

The C&C 30 is a nice boat, but so is a Catalina 30. Since you are already familiar with Catalina's you might wish to stick with the same manufacturer. Whatever you do, take the prospective boat out for a sail, a 30 footer feels quite a bit different from a 27, since it will be wider and heavier, as well as longer.

Great boat

Hi guys some of the problem I had where a rotted mast step that was caused by the shower drain not being sealed in when the boat was made.I fixed it my self becouse I could not find anty body to crall in my bilge to do it wright. my rudder needed drying out becouse water leaks in at the top of the fiberglass and cracks when it freezes the hardest part of this job is getting the rudder off the boat I have atall rig and my bow sprit was all cracked and rotted so dave sent me specs and I got a big peace of teak and cut one up no problem.(Well maybe just alittle problem) and the rest of my problems were coused by add on goodeys aouto pilot, refer, power inverter, and elec shortsshorts. If the desil moter is in good shape they run for ever I try to run ahole tank of gass throw every year but for a sail boat that is alot of hours motering I just came back from two weeks on the water and I thinkI toped my tanks off with 2 gal of fuel I love my C30 and dave at catalina can help you with anty repears that you need to handle your self.I think the C30 is very roomey for a30 foot boat and great choice I also think that the traveler is on thetop of the cabin and not in the cockpit mine is anty way and I have doger and bimine with a zip on center center piece to water proof the cockpit. I will be makeing clear sides to stop spray and rain. I have navey blue sunbrela and I think white would have been a better choice for the bimine Its alot cooler in the sun but my wife liked the navey so looking cool wins over being cool in my boat. I bought a 6' stock bimine from some one on the Internet and cut it down to fit then ran the split backstay throw two waterproof leather patches with agromit in the center. and cut the cover to fit around the split stays. This was alot easer once I tought my self how to sew.I wanted to have 6'2'' to stand under and my boom was about 5'11 when sailing so I moved the boom up about 4" and retaped it to the mast the only problem I had was the top of the sail rubed on the toping lift and the duchmen sail handeling system so I put a ridged vang and removed the back stay and the duchman and instoled alazyjack to handle the sail next year I will get anew main sail cuy to fit over the bimine hope this helps JOlson
