I have a main and headsail that are at least 20 years old with tears along the leech. Is it worth having them repaired or cut down?

It might just be the UV cover on the headsail. Easy fix. Worth it definitely, if the sail is still good.

If the sails are really and truly old and you have no more use for them, cut them up and make storm sails or anchor sails. You can still get some use out of them.

This is a shorter term reuse, as the UV is tough on them, but they can also become shade panels. If you cut them big enough, they can shade an entire midsection of the boat, keeping the interior cooler on hot days, and allowing you to lie under them on deck.

I took my old sails to a person who makes various types of beach bags, tote bags, etc. out of them. For the donation of the sails, she made my boat babe a large, zippered beach bag with her name spelled out using the nautical alphabet and sewed the sail logo onto the side. Very rugged, very cool.

i sent my sails for the Catalina 22 to "Sail Care" in Ford City, Pa. I assume they are still in business....I asked them to stich
them which they did.....sent them to them very dirty and in poor condition and they came back looking like new sails.

Most sail lofts will look over your sails and give you an estimate about repair, and if it is worth repairing and cleaning or not. I used a couple of old sails for awnings. Wife sewed the edges and I put grommets to tie off to stays, etc.

Roland, I'd love to hear more about this service. I just cut up a 26 year old Genoa that tore horizontally but would love to have bags made for my crew as keepsakes. Mike (mbshapir AT bellsouth.net)

Sail Care is great! I sent them my old 150 genny, and it came back like new. Reasonable price, compared to buying a new sail. After 5 years, the sail still looks good and trims nicely. Check out sailcare.com

We found two good uses for our old jib sail by cutting it into two pieces. The bottom and largest part became a fine sun shield tarp for our camper that no one has one like it. We gave the top of the sail to a family friend kid at our marina so he could make his own sailboat design. Yep... if you don't know what to do with it, give it to a kid and let 'em become creative. These are our future engineers... and sailors.

Came across this concept a few years ago in Boothbay Hbr., ME. Have also seen displays at boat shows. The person who did mine is no longer around. Anyway, google: beach bags made from sails. You might happen across someone in your area. Good luck.

If they're still around, there's always "Sail for Sustenance". They take donations of used sails and distribute them in places like Haiti where fishing is one of the only means of earning a living but the cost of fuel and engine repair are prohibitive.

I have been looking for old, tired sails to finish up a tee pee that my son and I built in the backyard. Someone was kind enough to donate two sails for that but I need at least two more. Anyone in the Quakertown area able to help us? Thanks for any leads.

a good storm sail is made out of 12 oz cloth so most jib or mains will not be very strong for that application
