I have some two-stroke outboard motor gas (50:1 ratio). Would it hurt my six-cylinder Chrysler car if I put it in my car's gas tank (a little at a time)? In other words, will a little oil in the gas hurt the engine?

It will be fine

Just pore it in there, it is a good way to get rid of it. You won't even know it is in there.

I do it every year

What ever fuel is left over from the outboard gets put in my car or truck, I put it in when I fill up the tank so its about 4-5 gals of mixed fuel to about 10 gals of fresh fuel. The truck has about 200 k on it and I have never fouled spark plugs If you do a search in the archives you'll see that we had a lot of discussion about this topic

And professional mechanics say it was a bad idea.

Its bad for the cat, the O2 sensor and the injectors, give it to a gardener. Tim

Thats if you do it on a daily basis

Been working on engines since I'm a 10 year old and I'm over 50 now and my dad has been doing this for a living all his life and he agrees with me that a little oil mixed fuel with FRESH fuel is not going to ruin your car if you do it once maybe twice a year.

Clog a Sparkplug???

Two cycle oil won't hurt a car. Gasoline and oil are very simular substances. If it is good synthetic oil it should burn completely and might even help your engine. If we lived close I'd buy it from you $2 /gallon

But it's not fresh fuel

I am a GM driveability tech, been doing it for 25 years, on an older car w/o emissions controls no problem, but on anything ten years old or less, you are asking for trouble, not just the oil, but the gas is stale, it goes bad after a month or two, could be contaminated with water or whatever splashed near the tank, not worth the risk imho. not bad rarely

What about the thought that a bit of top cylinder lube is a good thing on an occasional basis? Good for the valves, guides and seals. Well diluted it shouldn't be a problem from time to time.

Not a problem

I am also a Mechanic been working on cars since I was 10 and I'm 32 now My dad also a long time Mechanic and we both say go for it. Its not going to heart your motor I have done it numerous times with out a problem.

Careful

I killed my rental car in Marathon last week. We had some gas in the dinghy can that had some water in it the only place we could find to dump it wanted $3.00 a gallon we were on our way when I thought lets just put it in the tank of the car. We made it to the gas station and about another 100 feet. I had always emptied our tank out into the car first time somthing like this ever happened. If your sure the gas is good go for it.

So, let me get this straight

4 gallons of 3 month old gas/oil mix that I would put in my outboard in spit second mixed with 15 gals of fresh gas from the pump is going to harm a co2 sensor, the injectors and what ever What do you call stale gas? 2 weeks, 4 weeks

Not Going to Tell (Rick)

Water is a lot different than 2 cycle oil mix mixed with fuel

It Was Not Me, I Aint Gonna Cop to Nothing

Just wish we knew how much water was in that gas. It was only two gallons into an eighteen gallon tank. Guess we could have just poured it on the concrete and let it evaporate. If your in Marathon and the rental car company wants to give you a red Cadillac take the Lincoln instead, trust me.

Chrysler Fog

Probably will smoke as it burns, may clog plugs...but hey, no worse than most of the Chryslers! Hee hee. just kidding. You got a hemi? I actually loved the old "Super 'Cuda" from the 70s. Now THAT was a HEMI!

Not bad for the plugs

If the gas was going to foul plugs, it would foul them in your little motor. It may be bad for the O2 sensor, in an injected car. If you got an older carb model vehichle around put it in that. Worse can happen is a little smoke, and one old enough to have a carb on it probably smokes anyway.

Never said it would hurt your motor...

but i reiterate it doesn't take much to foul a sensor, may not kill it but it will not read correctly, affecting driveability, mileage and emissions. We have to use special silicon sealer that wont harm the O2 sensor on intake manifolds, even high sulfer fuel can damage the fuel level sender, I can tell when they change from summer fuel to winter fuel by customer complaints, being at the dealership I see the cars that no one else can fix as well as newer cars that are still under warranty, I have been dealing with obd2 for 10 years, the computer expects fuel that has certain characteristics, give it something else and it gets confused. sorry for the rant but in closing, if you do dump your old fuel in your car and it acts up later, be good enough to fess up to your mechanic, it will make his job a lot easier, or rent a car and put it in that. ;D SEP. I would never do this

It won't hurt the motor, but it will plug up the catalytic converter. They have two-stroke oil out now that has the fuel stabilizer mixed with the oil. I had it in my hand yesterday. Buying anything else after reading this is foolish. There must be a lawn and garden service company in your block who will take it in one second. They're blowing a lot of leaves this week. Yesterday, I got out the chain saw that sat for 3 years in the shop. 3 years ago it was leaking gasoline so I tipped it over on it's side so it would quite leaking gas and left it there. Got it out yesterday to cut some wood. It was out of gasoline. I didn't drain the tank 3 years ago I just left it sit. It would not start. Took it apart to find the fuel line had a hole in it. Installed new fuel line and the engine started right up and ran perfect. 3-year-old fuel in the carburetor and it ran perfect. Gasoline that sits in the cold garage for the winter will be no problem at all. Leave it in the can with the cap and the vent on tight and you won't have a problem with it, I promise.
