Boat loans on larger boats generally require Federal Documentation. Why? State laws vary from state to state with no uniformity and that is worrisome should the companies have to take them back due to non payment. With Federal Documentation, the laws are the same regardless of what state the boat is in. In other words uniformity.

Federal documentation is also recognized by many countries and give you some protection as there are reciprocal agreements. With State registered boats, that is not the case except for Canada and a few other countries close by. Thus going offshore, it is better to be federally documented.

As for Washington, look at the job they are doing with Trillions in debt. If I were in the White House, heads would roll.

How did this end up in the Trailor Sailor area? Odd that this is here since a percentage of us can't document our boats. I would have documented mine but I didn't fit the size requirements.

I think there's a biblical passage that explains this, having to do with some number of beasts...:D

I had one....then the economy caught up with me! That and marriage.

Sold the Catalina 30 and downsized to the Compac 23. I really miss the 30 but it was just getting expensive to keep her.

I sure hope the intern who was tasked with writing this add on fee into the code did his homework. Several years ago they pulled the same stunt with the truckers radio service and some smart ass lawyer found a section of the federal code that said the fee had to cover the cost.....The cost of refunding my $36 was probably in my income tax somewhere but for sure the whole program ended up a net loss. They had better make it every two years and electronic. I haven't seen my checkbook in years and pay everything over the net. Paypal would be nice. They only way to complain is to fall by your Congressman's office personally and bang on the desk. Happens so infrequently it gets talked about for days. Email will get you a simple willy auto reply.

I have always been surprised that the annual USCG documentation renewal was "free". Guess some one finally noticed that a renewal fee would be another source of revenue. Considering that a documentation decal isn't issued any longer, $26 seems a bit much.
I just sent in the renewal form & fee a couple weeks ago. Probably the least expensive item of boat ownership but none the less aggravating.
