I was interested in attending a school during the off season. Anyone recommend one in the MD/Va area?

I took Mariners School classes in Fairfax VA. If you go to their website you can find other locations in the area. I had enough sea time to get the master 50 ton coastal/inland with sailing and towing endorsements. I got the discount that was offerd during the Annapolis Boatshow, so ask about the discount when you call them.

In New England we have Boatwise , well run and they will stand by you till you get it done . I would suggest a live class .Many of us know a lot till it comes to the testing ,believe me the testing is not a cake walk as some have eluded to in these forums . If you have the time as sea to get a 50 ton go for it ,it is not much more than the 6 pack .Hint, study the rules questions till you know them by rote. Some of the questions /answers are confounding ,and if you use common sense you made get them wrong!Go for it . Ed
Online only?
I was going to second the recommendation for Mariners School, which is where I got my 6-pack ticket last year. Their instruction was terrific, and helped me ace the exam. But then I scrolled a little further in the replies and saw that they only do online instruction now? That sucks! I thought a major part of the course was the interactions that took place between the class and the instructor, and among members of the class. I can't see how online instruction only would be an improvement.
At the same time, if the online course is anywhere near as good as the classroom instruction, then Mariners School is worth every penny. Check 'em out.

Not sure I could learn the navigation portion of the test without classroom discussion. For me it was the most difficult part of the class.

I agree with the majority, on-line doesn't compare to being in the actual classroom and interacting with the instructor and other students. I also attended Mariner's School classroom to obtain my Master's 50 Ton. Given that it is only on-line, I doubt I would have gone that route.
Not just a 6 pack
I was told if you want to use a USCG license for a sailboat that a 6 pack won’t do it you need a master and a sailing endorsement. Only then can you take passengers for hire on a sailboat. You may want to check it out for yourself to make sure I did not get bum advice but it was from one of the schools.
