I read in a recent newsletter from our local broker that the waiting period to obtain documentation is now 5 months. Can this be true? If so, what can be done to help hurry the process?By the way, I have now waited 2 months and still counting.
I purchased my boat in mid-July and am still waiting for my documentation to arrive after 6 months and counting! I have been checking for word of my documtation by typing in my boat name at: http://www.st.nmfs.gov/st1/commercial/landings/cg_vessel2.htmlSo far, nothing. Given my (limited) experience, your brokers estimate is optimistic if anything.
I purchased a new Hunter 456 and closed on it on January 10th (a Saturday). We used a documentation service and I received a fax from my documentation service with my "Official Number Awarded" on the 13th of January (a Monday). She told me that the documents from the USCG would be a long time coming though...Good luck! -Jim-s/v/ Forever
Can anyone explain why I'd want to document my boat ? When I purchased it, it was documented, and the broker talked me into going to "standard" registration....I've never really understood the pros and cons of documenting....thanks
clearance reasons while traveling. I never saw a vessel that WASN'T documented, in Central or South America. I'm sure that most of the counties we visited, wouldn't let you in if you weren't documented. In Martinique, the French customs man said it was the boats' passport and to hand it over. We were scared. (not) Besides, being documented is just plain cool.
I used a very reputable documentation firm when I bought my used boat, which had been documented when first built. We filed in June, the USCG needed one page clarified from the original lender in August, and we are expecting the approved papers any day. According to the broker, he is now receiving approved packages that had initially been sent to the USCG back in June and July. No doubt the USCG has taken some substantial staffing and funding hits in this particular department.
They are in the process of converting to a new system. The normal wait time was around 6 weeks in the old days (last year). It is suppose to speed up the process once they get over the hump. My understanding is that they are scanning all of the existing documents into the new system.
is, if you plan on visiting foreign countries, to have the US Government help retrieve your boat, if for any reason the foreign government seizes it. If you never plan on visiting foreign countries there is no need to document.Terry
Ken -Thanks for posting the query, as it makes me feel better than I'm not alone in waiting for my documentation. I guess it'll be quite a while longer, since I've only been waiting since September. Mark posted a good link, but the data as of today is only current to December 6th. Patience, grasshopper....Trevor
Did it myself, no problem. CG made a typo/spelling error and corrected it with only a phone call a week later. Doc service is a rip off. Don't use them unless you bank require them
