USCG Documentation No. MARKING

My newly purchased H320 is my first USCG documented vessel. One of the requirements is marking the official COD number "in block-type Arabic numerals at least 3" high on some clearly visible interior structural part of the hull". My question is WHERE and HOW should I do this. My boat is 3 years old and as far as I can tell, the previous owners failed to to do this despite the warning in the USCG documentation that this would be a $10000 penalty per day for this violation. Maybe they marked it somewhere "the sun don't shine" but I haven't found it. Can I do this with say a Permanent Marker? Or does it have to be painted on? If so where? The entire interior seems to be inner liner and trim. The "engine compartment" doesn't seem big enough for 3" letters without removing the engine. Gary Hunter 320

My suggestion

Gary, I used black acrylic lettering from WM and stuck them on to the inside of a cockpit lazerette. I then epoxied over them. You have to have them in a place where they are permanent. Choose a somewhere that is not conspicuous, but easily accessible. The number will stay with the boat. John Richard s/v Jack's Place

I did the same. I used black 3" letters and placed them in the cockpit lazarette where they won't get covered by stored gear. I then covered them with WM penetrating epoxy. That way they are easy to find without searching through the boat. Good luck.

in a locker or lazarette!

Gary: You can place inside a locker or lazarette. We had a sign guy make a stencil with the number on it. You peel off the backing and paint the number on the liner or hull. Then you can paint over the number with some clear epoxy if you want.

$10,000 fine

I just received my Vessel Documentation. The letter from the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security and the USCG states that the Official Number on the COD must be 3" high, in block type arabic numerals, and permanently affixed to a clearly visible interior portion of the hull. The name and hailing port must be at least 4" high. the penalty for operation of a vessel in violation is $10,000 per violation per DAY of continuing violation. Look in the cockpit locker...thats where mine is.
