Traditionally, they're mounted off the transom. You can secure it to your backstay or install a removable teak staff for pretties. That's what I have and honestly, I never put it out. I guess I'm just not as patriotic as most folks (or maybe just a little more lazy)! ;-)LaDonna

I think I read that the proper size is 1/2 inch per foot of boat length measured on the short side of the flag. Flown from the transom or 1/3rd the distane up the leach of the most aft sail.
