When I closed on my boat in May 2008, it took until July for the paperwork to come through.

I wasn't particularly diligent in my effort. We obtained the boat in June, last summer and I didn't file all of the paperwork until Feb. 16. Still, I got the documentation back in early May (or late April). When I checked on it once, the notification said they were on Feb. 2 paperwork. I think I got mine about a week later, so I was pleasantly surprised.
There is not need to wait for documentation to pay the sales tax. Anybody waiting is bound to pay a small late penalty.
