Urgent Hood furler question

I'm trying to gain access to the turnbuckle on a rig that was stepped yesterday. If the plastic screw and subsequent half circular pieces are removed, can the lowest section with the drum attached slide upwards over the extruded sections of the furler? This should be possible in theory but has anyone ever tried it?

yes, that is exactly what you do. remove the screw, then the half shell that the screw goes into. Then push the foil towards that gap and you can push the other half out of the hole that locks it in place and the drum / torque tube is released from the foil. You can then slide the whole assembly up the foil to get access to the turnbuckle.

When I did it, I would tie a halyard around the base of the drum so that I could use it to support the drum while I worked on the turnbuckle to tune the rig. With #3a & #3b removed the only thing that will be holding the drum down is the D-shackle that connected the base of the drum assembly to the tack fitting on the bow.

I had the rig off of my C30 a couple of times and did this process twice each time. I have since replaced my Hook 810DL with a Harkin Mk-IV. I sold my old hood along with the old main and genoa to another C30 owner and helped him get it installed on his boat. That would be 5-times as an owner and once as a consultant. Makes me just about a pro rigger.

My past experience with Hood furlers made me question whether it was possible to do this without removing the forestay. I had the yard remove the plastic piece at the top so the whole assembly would slide up further. Unfortunately it was only enough to reveal the lower pin. Luckily, I was able to remove the set screw, half shells and then slide the drum and lower tube up over the foils. To anyone that's doing this I would advise using your halyard to lift the drum assembly out of the way
