Tartan 37 Gore Bay - Lake Huron - Canada
I hit a sandbar (in a channel marked as dredged to over 6 feet) and snapped off the lower 6 inches off my skeg. I am in need of a new or used one to replace the lost part. 1980 Hunter 30 I could use any photos or drawings that anyone may have of the skeg or bearing piece. We will probably have to refabricate a new one. If you know of where a skeg or skeg bearing is available, have one or even know how to repair this please email me as soon as possible. sord@rogers.com Hunter does not have one or drawings for one.

:) You will never guess

Went to see the damage today having just talked to the marina before. Upon looking at the damage we see that the rudder shaft is bent and can be straightened. The skeg is missing the bottom 3 inches. The kicker is the bushing that the rudder shaft sits in was still slipped over the shaft end. This is a small stainless tube 2 inches long. This is unbelievable as the boat was towed over 15 nm and sat in the habour for 1 week. nothing was holding it in place except the water between the tube and the shaft. The damage looks to be about $1200 canadian which is less than we were lead to believe.

Some thoughts

I just put a new rudder on my H30, and had to reassemble the skeg. A new rudder from Foss costs around $ 1,300. If your rudder is original, I would get a new one, not straighten. The likelyhood that your rudder stock is corroded and rusted is high, and the bending and straightening will likely lead to failure. ( mine looked fine and was junk inside ) As for the skeg. I would do the following in your situation. Get a rudder shoe ( bronze ) that will fit the bottom of the rudder and skeg, and bolt it into the skeg. You have to dig out through the skeg to place a washer and nut, then fill back in and fair. I have had a lot of trouble re-attaching my skeg and getting things lined up correctly. If it doesn't work ( curing now ) I intend to cut off the piece at the bottom and install a shoe. I have seen this on another H30 near my home.
