We need advice...we have the opportunity to buy a new Beneteau 373 (which is basically a redesigned 361) but we are concerned about the size of the engine. It comes with a Yanmar 27 hp. The boat has a displacenment of about 14,500 lbs. It seems too small to us but we haven't sailed it yet. We would use it mostly for weekend and day trips in and around the Texas gulf coast. Does anyone have recent experience with this combination of boat displacement/size and engine hp in a heavy head wind? Any thoughts would be helpful.

Beneteau would not underpower...

Beneteau would not underpower... I am sure it will drive the boat at hull speed.

Diesel Power

I sail a Beneteau 361 with a Westerbeke 361. The displacement is nearly 13,000 lbs and the 27hp engine runs smoothly at 3,000 rpm and easily moves us along at around 6+ kts.

IWesterbeke engine

I have a 361 with a Westerbeke 30-3B 27 hp engine and it has been more then adequate to drive the boat. I don't think you will have any problems at all. Good Luck with your new boat Charlie

Beneteau 373

I have a new 373 and oreder the 40 HP engine. I had a 331 with the 27 hp and had trouble coming in and out of inlets on jersey coast. The extra bit of horsepower moves me along very nicely. I'd say go for it..

27 hp is fine.

Audie & Susan-- I would think that 27 hp would move a 14,500 pound boat at it maximum hull speed. I don't see any problem with this engine. Here in SF we can have some very strong tides but even here I think that would be more than enough. The 373 is a beautiful boat. Enjoy your boat. By the way a few weeks ago I was in Amarillo and I saw a wonderful show about the history of Texas. It was in an outdoor theater that was in a canyon. The show was great and I would recommend anyone in the area to make sure they see it. Good Luck. --Dan

3GM

The 3GM will push you as well as any engine. If you need more punch go to a three blade prop.
