I'm considering a trip up the hudson from NYC on an Oday 35 (48 ft. clearance needed) to Lake Champlain. My charts show fixed bridges at 20ft vertical clearance above Troy. Am I missing something or is it necessary to take down the mast at this point? Are there marinas along the way with the facilities to do this? Anyone with information about this trip, please respond. I'd like to learn as much as I can about it. My plan would be to do the trip in stages. I would even consider wintering the boat somewhere along the way and return the following season.

I have only sailed from the Erie Canal and south through the Troy lock. There are no bridge issues as you know. There are two locations for mast work that I know about. We rented a car to check out the DIY yard at Castleton. We watched four guys wrestle with the crane and boat on about a 30-footer. No way were we going to tackle a heavy 50-foot keel-stepped mast with that rig. Instead we motored down to Catskill Creek. The first marina on starboard as you enter the river is what I would recommend. I think it is "River View". All the transients that I have talked with used them.

P.S. short walk to right(east) to a restaurant. Longer walk west to the wine shop on main street. :)

when i was just a kid my uncle used to have a sailboat on the catskill creek---3rd mooring in the creek from the hudson river was his had a gaff riggged sloop 36 ft built in 1903--he hauled out every yr in that first marina from the river...was nice area--i kinda miss it there escept for the coldness and lack of easy access to sea lol....takes a few days to get there lol...but is a gorgeous trip and bridges are high and no obstructions to big nyc...LOL...have fun......is sooo gorgeous there...will be a goood trip.....

I mde the voyage from Havre de Grace Maryland to Lake Champlain 2 years ago. It's an easy journey but takes a little planning. We stayed in the CD canal one night,then in Atlantic city,then Sandy Hook. If you want details,contact me and I will give you any ionfo I can.

It's an easy trip. Get a "Waterway Guide" and check out the NYS Canal web site. I agree with Riverview Marina in the Catskill Creek to raise & lower your mast. They had a pile of old mast supports to use in making a set for your boat. The close by bar projected the NY Yankees game on an adjacent oil tank which was important for us.

There are lots of free places to stop. Waterford, at the junction of the Erie Canal has free dockage, water, power, computers, internet, pumpout (free?). Two major supermarkets and several restaurants nearby.

Ft Edward, the second best stop, is not available much of the time because of the tree huggers spreading PCBs and money throughout waterway. :soapbox: Check the NTMs on the canal website for current dredging info.

Another vote for "Riverview". They were helpful when we had our mast steped there in 2005. Consider Utches Marina in Cape May. Nice facility. Good places to eat. The town with interesting shops is within walking distance. WM and a wine shop close by.

Sounds like Riverview is the way to go. I'll look into them and start reading the cruising guides. If I am reading this correctly then, the mast must come down North of Troy? It looks like it can go back up close to Lake Champlain.

also ... if you're in the vicinity of New Hamburg on the Hudson on your trip up or back ... the New Hamburg Yacht Club has a couple of transient slips ... if one's available it's yours! Not the greatest but it has electric and water available. If I'm in town, the Vice Commodore will be happy to buy you your first beer ... keep in touch ....

Thanks for the info. Please stop by Riverton Yacht Club if you're ever on the Deleware as well. Wednesday night is race night.
