We are in the process of purchasing a new 42MkII. Scary! We've previously owned a Bristol 40. Very tradional. A big jump! We are considering the white leatherlike fabric that Catalina is offering. Any comments? How does this stand up as opposed to fabric? We have grandchildren whom we hope will be accompaning us as we travel in our small (Boston Harbor to Nantucket) world. Beyond that, we are hoping to travel to the tropics in our new boat and to enjoy it to the fullest. So, If our little grandaughter draws 'Tigger' on the gorgeous white upholstery, how do we address that? Does anyone have the secret cleaning compound we are looking for? Getting rid of the greatly loved granduaghter is not an option!

Upholstery

For a faster answer you should go to sailnet.com and sign up for both the C42 and Catlina mail list. Also see related link. This will bring you to the Catalina 42 national Assoc.

Seal the surface against stains

Staining from inks etc is a real problem. I remember an Oakland boat show some years ago when they had the bright idea of stamping everyone's hands to show that they had paid for their tickets. It causes virtually permanent stains on inflatable boats and upholstery of brand new boats! Ballpoint or marker ink is one of the worst. Usually if you get it right away (I use IG pink with or without water dilution and only use paper towel- not a scuff pad on delicate surfaces) . HOewver, if you use it too long, the solvent in the ink, often dissolves some of the vinyl and the stain then gets part of the vinyl itself. Prevention is the best cure! I use Silkenseal on the leather seats of my restored 60 Cadillac and 66 Pontiac GTO, also on the dash. Because it actually forms a protective "skin" it prevents ballpoint oil or other stains from getting down into the leather or vinyl vinyl pores. We have also done extensive tests on Bottomsiders cushions (vinyl-coated closed cell foam) to support this claim. If new upsholstery is sealed in this way, light "soap and water" cleaning is usually all that is requiredm, in fct the Silkenseal itself does act as a mild cleaner since the surfactant use to suspend the cross linker is, by definition, a detergent. On interior upholstery this delicate NEVER use something gritty and harsh or that contains strong solvents or caustic like KOH (like some vinyl cleaners that are also meant for inflatable boats and fenders). Thanks and good luck Jim W I remember

White Ultra Leather Interior

We have a new 350 with the White Ultra Leather. We also sail often with 4 children. The Fabric holds up just great. You will have no problems with it. It wipes of very easily. I might recommend going to any number of places or WEPI.Com and getting the MarineKleen stain and odor eliminator. If ink or somthing similar should get on the leather fabric, you just pump spray on and let it sit. The ink will completey be gone in about an hour or so.(This occured on my boat a couple of weeks ago.) You will very much enjoy the look and feel of the ultra white leather option. Best of luck with your new boat. Keep us informed as to how you like her!

And on the other hand...

Geri: We have a new Cat 36 mkII with the white ultra-leather interior cushions. We have used the boat on a 2-month, 1000-mile leisurely cruise from Mobile, AL. to Key West and back. Just Sue and I, no kids. If we had to choose again, I think we would pick a fabric-covering for the cushions, and not for stain removal. There are two reasons: 1. The ultraleather remains somewhat slick and "slipery". You can easily slide right out of the seat in a seaway. Especially when you are tired. If the boat is moving around, you have to work to stay in the seat. 2. The cushions are not well made. The internal stuffing material is a very fine wadded-up polyethelene film. This film is so fine that it slowly works its way out the button holes on the cushions, and you have to start trimming this stuff off around each button on the most-used seats. Also, the buttons are connected to the internal cord (holding the buttons on) by a hook, not a loop. So the buttons can "pop off" under certain circumstances, and -- of course -- the loop of cording has retracted inside the cushion, never to be seen again! Its nice to be able to doze off in a seat without waking up on the floor! Check out the fabric seats. Really! Fair winds with calm seas! Al Carlson s/v Wings of Dawn 2002 Catalina 36 MkII

Buttons on Ultra Leather?

Wow.. I have found the Ultra Leather to be quite comfortable.. I guess it is a personal thing. There are no "buttons" on the Ultra Leather in the 350 interior -- anyway.... Tell us more about your trip! Sounds like it must have been great! What were the high points? (and low points)?.. Take care Andy

Prefer fabric

Our 1995 MKII Catalina 36 has a fabric that is almost suede. Would be okay if it wasn't faded light green sea mist something or other. Would like to redo it with fabric, dark blue with white dots, like we had in our 1988 Catalina 30, but finding no good outlets for fabric suitable for a boat. Any suggestions?
