Intending to replace all cushions and so upholstery on our 34fter - archives have one for using cotton and one against - boat is used for racing and week end ( up to a week occasionally ) for cruising all year around - what fabric materials are suggested from those who have done the job. sailing area is at 42deg South so cooler climate usually.

Cotton does not hold up well.
Richard: If you go to a shop that does this type of work they should have samples. In the states, they have a material wear rating on the fabrics. Based on this rating you should be able to determine what is going to last the best. There are also treatments that can be applied to the fabric (during the mfg process and after the upholstery has been sewn.

acyrlic. That's what Sunbrella is made of, though I used a lighter weight. You can get the material at any fabric shop. We bought ends of bolts for about six bucks a yard. If you are doing the work yourself, get the CD from Sailrite. It explains in simple terms just how easy it is to sew them at home. While you are at the sailrite website check out my pictures in their photo gallery. Don't use cotton. Nylon would be my second choice... Ron/KA5HZV

I used a discontinued fabric from volkswagon. It looks very nautical and REALLY has good wear. You can call the car companies and ask if they have any of last years fabric. I bought mine for $4 per yard!!!! It has a plastic backing.

About ten years ago I replaced all the cushions in my H34. I contacted Johnson Sails in St. Pete Fl. and asked them what the best fabric was. They sent me samples that were used on charter boats that were beautiful but just as important durable. Ten years later they look just as good as the day they were made. They are a blend of some kind but we are constantly getting compliments on how great I cushions look.

I RECENTLY REPLACED MINE WITH SYNTHETIC SUEDE. IT LOOKS GREAT AND IS WATER REPELLANT. I DID THE WORK MYSELF USING THE OLD ONES AS PATTERNS. THE BACKS, ZIPPERS AND VELCRO WERE STILL GOOD SO I REUSED THEM. THE FABRIC IS ABOUT $40.00/YD UNLESS YOU CAN FIND IT ON SALE. VERY HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS SO FAR.

Was Hurculon, We re upholstered with a local shop who did home furniture and recreational vehicle cushions. We picked another fabric color and pattern also Herculon) and it has held up well for the 11 years since it was done. There is no reason to a marine related shop do the work, a cushion is a cushion, regardless where it is used. Just pick a good fabric, the shops will advise you regarding wear. Best of luck!

Ok..I know what you're gonna say when you see "Sunbrella," but the fact is the folks at Sunbrella have recently debuted a series of interior fabrics. I recently refitted the entire interior of my 78h30 using a mottled patterned silver-light gray Sunbrella interior fabric and the stuff is great! Looks great, too. The selling point was a demo where ketchup was smeared on a swatch, let sit for a few minutes and then wiped up with a damp sponge...no stain. I think it's worth a look.

This past winter when Hunter was building our new boat we ordered fabric from UPHOLSTERY-FABRIC.COM. We had the fabric drop shipped to Hunter. When we went down to see Mahina Kai as she was being built and met the Ladies that do all the upholstery work. I said "you guys must think we are crazy" They Said "Honey you don't want to know what we were thinking!" Anyway I'll try to attach a photo.

Another Vote for Sunbrella
Over the 17 years that we have owned our Hunter, we have replaced the interior cabin cushions twice. The first time we used regular material that was supposed to be tough enough for the marine environment. It faded in one season. We went with the Sunbrella interior fabric (much softer) the second time around. Three years later, it looks brand new. Easy to clean, and no fading.
