I just received the Hood Seafurl, furler kit to upgrade from the 810 line drive loop furler on my 37 Legend. In the instructions it says to pull the core from 1/3 of the furling line. Has anyone experience doing this? Is there any easy way to pull 20 to 25 feet of core out of double braid? I've never done it but feel this is the time to ask for info. I was thinking that since this is a fracional rig with a smaller jib than a jib driven boat, I might not need to core the line to get it all on the drum. Any thoughts on this - Thanks

am I missing something here?

William: Am I missing something here or what. If you are going to remove 1/3 of the core from the furling line, it may be easier to purchase a small size line. If the furler woudl take 7/16" you should be able to use 3/8" and get the same results. You may what to contact them and see what they really meant or read their instructions again.

Not Difficult to Do

With new line it's fairly easy. Fold the braided line tightly where you want to cut the core. Pull the core out and cut it. At the end where you want to pull on the core peal back a half inch or so of the cover. Use a pair of pliers or Vice-Grips and grip the core and start pulling. Comment: With the the old system you didn't have to worry about chafe but with the new one you do. Make sure there is a fair lead to the part of the drum that the line coils up on and that it doesn't rub on the sides of the drum opening otherwise it will chafe. To prevent chafe you may have to add a block, maybe with a pendant, inside the chain locker to better lead the line.

Steve - Its true!

On the Hood 800SL (Single Line), Hood specifies a 3/8" x 80' line with the first 1/3rd de-cored. See the related link. (Hood sells the line already de-cored for $157.)

Core what you need

I did the same upgrade last year and am very satisfied with the results. As to coring 1/3 of the line, I first determined how much need coring. I did this by handind rolling the furler until the furling drum was "full" but not overly Full of the line. Then I hoisted the headsail on the foil and pulled the line to furl the headsail. Thew result--there was not yet enough line on the drum to fully furl the sail. But the amount of sail left unfurled gave me a pretty good idea of how much more line I needed on the drum and how much I would have to core. I did not have to core much more than 6 ft, which is a lot less than 1/3 of the line on may Legend 37.5. Jack
