....on a Wyliecat 30 this past weekend on LI Sound. My first experience with this boat was sailing against her in a distance race a couple of years ago. I was amazed at the performance of this little 30 foot cat boat. This time I was helming on her against a fleet of J-30's and a couple of S-2's. Breeze was light (5kts) and flat water. We started pulling away from the entire division right from the start. By the time we reached the first mark we had a 4 minute lead on the next boat and had over run half of the division that left 7 minutes ahead of us. The crew was the owner(trimmer) and a very nice young lady(talk about sailing short handed). Tacking and jibing was so easy. No genoas to release and retrim, no traveler to adjust. A mainsheet and outhaul were the total of the adjustments. We were finally caught and past by two boats from another division, a J-120 and a J-109, both out and out sleds. The performance of this boat, and the ease with which it is sailed just "blew me away". Even dropping the main is easy, feather up and release the halyard, thats it! The sail drops into its cradle without being touched. Oh, and another thing, you never have to worry about getting hit with the boom, there is none. Biggest drawback to this 30 footer, the cost, $140,000. But it sure has conquered many of the sailing problems that exist on traditional boats. PS, guess what the owner of West Marine sails???
