I took out the hatch, and will attach a picture of the underside of it with the butyl tape. The tape is about the same width and thickness as recessed part of hatch. My thoughts are to fill the recessed area with two pieces of the tape--one on top of the other and let it squish out while tightening down and use a heat gun to make sure it is very workable. I also have prepared the screw holes with countersinking.
