Some of you know that I have been doing extensive work on my 1973 O'Day 22, "Cassidy". I have a blog dedicated to the restoration (link below) that I have just updated after a four month hiatus. Anyway, I know that some of you are interested in repairs/restoration work similar to what I am doing, so you might want to check it out. I am open to your feedback and can even fill you in on some important "lessons learned" on this project. A couple of quick questions for the gallery: 1)Anyone know where I can find four wire deck connectors (like the Perko fittings), I can easily locate the two wire connectors but I would like to combine the masthead and steaming light wires into one connector. 2)Has anyone installed a topping lift on an O'Day 22 or similar boat? I know that I will need to drill a new hole in the masthead and install a pin and block. I am wondering how people have rigged this so that the line does not interfere with the main halyard, chafe the sail or interfere with the boom end/outhaul. Thanks in advance! I wouldn't combine the 2 lights
The masthead light and steaming light are one in the same. Do you mean the anchor light at the top of the mast?? If that's the case, I wouldn't combine the 2 as the anchor light by CG regs is for when you are at anchor and the steaming/masthead light are are when you are underway with a motor. Now if you mean the combination steaming/deck light, that's easy. The common ground is black and will connect to the ground coming from below deck. The 2 red pos. wires for the steaming/deck lights are crimped together with a butt connector and then connected to the pos. red from below deck. Now 1 switch will turn on both the steaming light and deck lights. Watch out though. If you are motoring at night with both the steaming light and deck lights on, you will not have very good night vision and it will be difficult to see beyond the bow of your boat.

My desire is not to route them to the same switch, but just to combine the leads into one 4 wire harness so that I can connect both cables with one deck connector as opposed to one 2 wire connector for the steaming light and one 2 wire connector for the anchor light. The 4 wire deck connector is what I am having trouble locating. I do not currently have a deck light (unintended pun).

You need a three wire plug
Josh, What you actually need is a plug with 3 pins. That way you have 1 wire for each positive (2) and the 2 grounds share one. This would let you run 2 separate items (anchor light, steaming light). So if you need 3 items (anchor light, steaming light, and spreader lights) you would need a 4 pin connector. I have the 3 pin, but I'll have to change it out if I ever add a spreader light. - Chuck D

ODay 22 Topping Lift
Did you see the post on 04/19 about the topping lift on the 23'? Looks like a good answer. I just posted the start of some really funkey questions about rigging an O'Day 22, that would really be answered by some back and forth e-mails with pictures. If you have any other photo's of your boats rigging with everything up and onboard I'd really appreciata a look.

Topping Lift
Josh, A friend of mine mounted one of those new fangled topping lifts under his boom that acts as a boom vang, also. It's a little pricey but is well worth it. When he puts his boat up at the end of the day, he attaches his main halyard to the end of the boom to give the topping lift some extra support. My topping lift has always rubbed against the lower part of my Main Sail and caused chafe. If you get an electric connector, make sure that it's polorized. Some of the electrical connectors that I've seen at West Marine are junk with very tiny set screws that can strip easily. After dealing with some bad electrical connectors for years, I'd want to be able to examine it close up before I installed it on my boat. I drove about 20 miles to Boat US one day to buy a four terminal polorized electric outlet for my mast lights, and I brought my small screw driver set with me. After I made my purchase, I got in my truck and took the connector out of the package to check the screws, and one of them was defective, so I brought it back into the store. I'm glad that I check it before I made that long drive back home. I check everything I buy, now.

Thanks Joe, I have a bit to learn about all things electrical. The deck fittings that I removed from Cassidy were the shoddy type that you describe. I am conflicted about where I should locate the fittings so they do not interfere with any of my control lines. They were previously on the starboard side of the mast step, but I have a new organizer plate and plan to run the halyards aft, so I don't think that this will work. I also considered placing the fitting on the tabernacle itself, but this is problematic due to the large holes I would need to drill through two SS plates, connecting/unconnecting difficulties, and also the fact that the wires would be routed directly above the compression post. Perhaps directly forward of the mast?
