When I go for a sail, unless I have a specific destination I usually head up wind at the beginning of the trip and the relax on the down wind leg back to the dock. How about you. Any method in your sailing diection.

I practice

I usually sail the legs of my YC's various race courses. It's fun and good practice.

Work then Relax

HMMM, I always sail up wind away from the marina and down wind back. This works for a couple of reasons: I sail often in the afternoon till dark on lake Erie which has a on shore winds towards the evening so it’s usually the only way I can sail. I also like the routine because you can maximize your time on the lake. If it takes you 3 hrs to get out it should take you a little less to get back to the dock. So you know when it’s time to turn around. However I’m sure somewhere deep in my brain there is my up bringing hounding me “GET YOUR WORK DONE FIRST THEN RELAX” Bob

Up current, down current

Sailing out of my berth is largely dependent on which way the current is going, either flooding or ebbing, and how much (it can be as much as 3 kn). I like to try and beat into the wind with the current and sail downwind against the current. That being said, I have had full days of sailng where the wind and current were working together all day. Reaching with the current going out, downwind with the current coming back. Kept the admiral real happy that day! ;D Gerard
