Sent my jib halyard up the mast when the hose came off the water pump on the Rc8 with my inlaws on board!! Any ideas on getting it down short of sending the wife up the mast? About four feet is left dangling.
If you have a bridge nearby that is the height of your mast, you could motor up to it very carefully, and have somebody placed on the bridge grab the halyard and either pull it down, or tie a length of line to it to reach the deck.Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty
If there's a fixed dock/pier nearby (and assuming you are on tidal water), tie up to the dock at low tide. Stand on the pier and maybe you can reach the halyard with a boathook.Or get a small person to go up in the chair. It will be a quick up and down. Ask around for volunteers.
J,Just of the top of my head, I'd try a snag board. Drive and bend several nails through a small board from both sides making a "snag board". It should look something like a porcupine. Attach to the main halyard with a line to pull the whole mess back down. Raise the snag board up with the main halyard and swing it around and try to "snag” the jib halyard. When snagged, pull both down. The snag board will sometimes work even if nothing more than the shackle is visible. Or so I heard, never had this problem myself . It’s also a good Idea to keep the ugly thing on board. Properly hidden of course.GregH23 Faster-
Once, I had the same thing happen, just as we were to depart for a week vacation. Before I took it to the yard for some very expensive help, I went to the market, purchasing all the prickly things. Egg beater, spagetti fork, potato masher, etc. I duck taped them all together, sent 'em up the mast and, by gosh, it snagged the open shackle. Hope your luck's as good. RD
Let her man(person?) the wench and have a friend tail it for her. Great training for all concerned. Keep deck traffic to a minimum or you'll find the top of the mast a real "E" ticket ride....
