Unusual hot/cold water problem

This weekend I recommissioned my fresh water storage tank and water heater. I filled them and turned on the water heater, the head and galley ran cold water and the hot water comes out around 130*. Perfect, right?

I found later in the day that after the system had sat unused for more than 20-30 minutes the galley cold water ran very hot for a few seconds before it ran cold. Weird.

After taking a closer look I realized that hot water was traveling from the water heater into the supply line on the cold side. The water comes from the pump and tees down toward the water heater and up to the galley faucet. Because the supply line is a vertical column between the water heater and the faucet, the hot water moves by convection up to the top of the column under the faucet.

I guess my two options are to install a check valve between the tee and the water heater or install a long loop of supply line between the tee and the water heater that goes down low enough to prevent hot water from moving up the line. Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

That should not happen. It's probably because you have air trapped on the top of the tank pressurizing the HW system. Bleed all the air from the tank by opening the blow-off valve on the tank until only water comes out. Good luck
