84 H31 Thanks to Patrick, I found out how to remove the sheaves from the mast base to investigate my leak, and found a 1/4" nylon line wadded and tangled up inside the mast. After yanking and snatching with needlenose pliers, I got both ends out but can't get the rest out. Probably removed around 25 ft. Anybody know what this could have been used for, or what could it be hanging on? I could cut it off, but I really don't want line dangling around in there. Thanks.....Gary

Messinger Line

Its probably a messinger line. It would be used to hoist new line, electric wires and so on up to the top of the mast and back. If they are old a brittle you probably haven't lost anything by removing. If, however, they are in good condition then if you ever need to run new wire for mast light or VHF antenna you'll have to run a new messinger up there somehow.

That makes sense...

Didn't think of that. However, both ends of the line are coming out of the mast base at the sheaves, so I can't use it as a pull line for future wires/lines, etc. So, I need to remove it alltogether, but it's hung on something preventing me from getting the whole line out. Guess I may have to cut it off at the mast base and leave it dangling in there until I unstep the mast. Thanks much....Gary

Here you go

Lower sheeves, The pin is held in by a internal spring clip, loosen any halyards, then pry the head of the pin with a flat blade screw driver to remove it. To install just line up sheeves and tap the pin back in.
