I am the proud co-owner of a 1979 Hunter 33. I need to get some parts for the Yanmar diesel engine (air filter, belts, water pump impeller), and all I know is that it is a 2-cylinder, 12HP per the boat survey. I have looked for the model and serial number plates per an engine ID service bulletin from Yanmar, but I can't find the plates where they say they should be. Maybe they have been removed or? Any ideas on how I can determine the engine model number?

My H33 has 2GM

This is a 15 HP and the model number plate is located on the front of the engine block. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

2QM15

Unless repowered it is a 2QM15 as Steve points out. Does the H33 have engine access from the quarterberth? My '79 H37C did NOT but later models did. At any rate I think the plate is only visible from there, on the block above the starter I think on my 2QM20. Torresen knows exactly what part numbers for that engine(Related Link). They would be the same as my 2QM20 and I have a list I could e-mail. But it is on my PC at home. The exception could be the belt-driven waterpump if you have the 'F' model, the "fresh water" cooled model. There is an impeller for that and, of course, the belt size is different if you are driving a waterpump. Do you have a heat exchanger? I do but it was an add-on. Ed s/v Ladylove h37skipper@aol.com

Look on Starboard side of engine

If you have a H33 that is not repowered, it is more than likely it is a 2QM15 - raw water cooled, max rpm 3000 (not 3600 as the GM series) Pretty bulletproof if maintained, zincs are important as are regular oil changes- the engine ID on the QM15 is on the starboard side of the engine right below the fuel pump - you may have to clean this area off to see it if your fuel pump or lines have leaked over the years. On my 1980 if I remove the access hatch in the head, and look low on the engine you can see the id on the side - not sure if 1979 have the engine access panel in the head.

Thanks - will look on the starboard side

Thanks guys for all the good feedback. We will check the starboard side through the head this Thursday. That is about the only area we did not look. I'll let you know. I've got a good source for parts once I get the model number.
