I finally got around to looking at an extra headsail that came with my boat and I need some help. It's not the usual dacron, but seems to be some type of laminated material. There is a visable open grid of thread covered with an opaque material. I'm not familiar with this type and would appreciate any information anyone can give. The other fact is that this sail is HUGE. It supposedly fits a C27, but it's a great deal larger than my present one. Luff - 34'4", Leech - 33'8", Foot - 19'3". The darn thing reaches all the way back to the cockpit. Is this oversized or am I just ignorant in another subject? Thanks P Jaudon s/v Second Star '85 C27 tr - #5923

Mylar maybe?

Your description sounds like a laminated sail such as mylar. Although there are many different types of laminates and I certainly don't know them well. These are usually racing sails which are used for a season or two at the most as they are more susceptible to UV degradation. The dimensions you list look to be a "No 1" genoa according to the specs listed at the IC 27/270 association page which is listed as a 170%.
