I have a 1991 Catalina and had the washers or at least one of them fail with the oil blowing out of the bottom of the engine. Creating major damage to the motor. I was told that Westerbeke does not use the same type washers and have made a change using washers made of another material now. My question is has anyone else experienced this type problem? Washers don't fail but nuts do
I recall earlier discussions about crush washers being used if you're talking about underneath the oil pan, like VW beetles. Recommendations were to not remove them for changing oil. But since almost all of the M25s I've seen come with the oil change hose, I wonder why this is an issue. The wording in your post suggest litigious aspirations.

The oil in the oil pan is basically at 0 pressure. I know there is some pressurization when the engine is running, but on a very low order. Certainly not enough to blow out a washer. As Stu mentioned there were instances of the crush washer on the oil drain plug leaking. But common sense is to replace this washer if the drain plug is removed. I think reuse of the washer was causing dripping leaks, which if you are a lazy boat owner and don't check your oil level frequently can cause oil starvation problems.
