I have noticed that the C350 comes with a Universal engine while the C387 comes with a Yanmar. I do not know much about the Universal so I am looking for input regarding it's performance and reliability. Also, is putting different engines in different boats made by the same manufacturer a cost cutting measure? Thank you for your help.

I have had both. They both seem to be reliable. I did like the fact the Yanmar doesn't have glow plugs. Turn the key and push the buttom to start.

Yanmar vs Universal

FWIW: I did a lot of research on engines when I repowered. Basically, both Yanmar & Universal owners seem to be very happy with their engines. I didn't hear a bad thing about either. It seemed to me that there were two main differences that may or may not matter to you: The universals seem to be able to fit into tighter spaces. Though the overall dimentions are about the same, the Universal's transmission shaft is a little higher than the Yanmar, thus allowing the motor to sit lower in the bilge. The overall result is that the Universal will sit about 1.5" lower once it's installed. I'm comparing the Yanmar 2GM20F to the comparable Universal that they typically swap out for the Atomic 4. The Yanmar, however, has a 5 year warranty vs the 3 year that Universal offers. Having no experience with either, I went with the Yanmar because of the longer warranty but I believe either engine would have given comparable performance, and the Universal probably would have been a better fit. Good luck with your decision. Allen Schweitzer s/v Falstaff C-30 Hull# 632
