Universal model 12, overheating issues.
TO ALL OF YOU WHO OFFERED ADVICE
on this overheating reply many deep thanks and i need to
give you the clap !

The "burping" link was helpful. i did that from the hoses hooked up to the hot water heater; ran antifreeze thru system. The petcock bleeder advice was helpful, as some air bubbles came out. The heat exchanger had been replaced a month or so ago by former owner of the boat, so that wasn't the issue. Still none of this worked, or seems to have been the culprit.
I replaced the heat gauge in the cockpit as the original 1984 gauge was still in there & looked decrepit.( a likely culprit) I replaced the heat sending unit on the block with a new one i bought at an auto parts store. I also found a black hose going to/from the raw water filter- screen, a bit smaller in diameter that it should have been, which had no water in it when I took it off and only then saw it was too small at the clamp. It need's a 5/8 inch size. Holding it down as far as possible water came in the hose from the thru valve.
When I had a friend and mechanic point his laser beam heat registering tool at the running engine, it showed the engine not running hot but the gauge in the cockpit showing 200* !
The culprit was apparently the sending unit not being on the same ohm
frequency (?) as the new guage, and was actually reading 100* degrees higher than the laser tool was showing. Replaced the heat sending unit and the hose and shazam ! Normal running temps.
and just in time for a couple weeks sailing on the mid-coast
before winterizing.
many thanks all sailors out there.
