Universal M35 engine/trans problems

I'm haveing a 1992 Catalina 36 surveyed in a couple of days. I am told htat some of these with the Universal M35 were mated to transmissions of marginal specs, that is, the trans. engine match was at the edge of the trans. specs.
Anyone know what to look for in terms of model and make or any other info?

That did happen

and as I recall it was because of a batch of bad insides on the transmissions.
