When a Universal M25 diesel cuts off underway but restarts a couple of minutes later, is the "culprit" the fuel filter filtering dirty diesel, or something more sinister:confused:

The fuel line line that ends in the fuel tank (pick-up?) has a filter screen on it. Pull it off and throw it away. The screen accumulates stuff on it and blocks the flow of fuel causing the engine to cut out. This solved my problem of the engine quitting.

But if the screen isn't necessary, why was it put in? Obviously, to "accumulate stuff". What happens to the "stuff" with the screen removed?

AA, they put it in for the reason you mentioned - it caught stuff. Then they got smart when they realized that it was catching stuff before the primary fuel filter, getting gummed up, and was inaccessible.

Kinda an easy answer from there: please, all the owners said, stop putting those damn screens in the tanks, my fuel filters do the job much better.

And they stopped doing that in '92 or '94.

And that's yet another reason to plumb your fuel: tank, primary, pump then engine. Most were built tank, pump, primary and the filters (haha) in the bottom of the pumps would get gummed up. You know, just like what's described in the Critical Upgrade page I suggested for you.

Why do boat builders get it wrong? They're no more perfect than us sailors!:):):)

Not being diesel engine savvy, please tell me specifically where this screen is and how I can, specifically, remove it. Thanks.

I can also testify to those damn screens clogging fuel delivery. My Yanmar YSM diesel on my old S 2 did the same thing - would run for about 5 minutes (half way out of the marina channel) then die right when U really needed it. Tried everything, injector cleaning, bleeding, filter replacements, pumped out 20 gallons of diesel by hand, only to find a stupid mesh screen shoved into the bottom of the fuel pick up tube. Go figure.
