This may sound like a really dumb question but, I recently purchased a 1985 Catalina 27 with a Universal M18 diesel and a Hurth Transmission. I can not find where to add and check transmission fluid. Where are these located and from which access is it best reached? Also my fuel filter appears to be a type of screw on filter (like an oil filter), How often should this be changed? Can I assume this filter does not separate water like a Racor? Can thid be purchased from a West Marine/BoatUS type store. Also, has anyone added a separator in conjunction with the type of filter? Any help would be appreciated ...

Attack it from behind....

There is what looks like a typical bolt on the top left (looking from behind) of the transmission housing. When you unscrew it, there is a scribed mark that tells you the correct level of fluid. You have to fill it through that hole. Best of luck, Jeff P.S. Can't help you with the in-line filter, I don't have one.

Hurth Transmission

This puzzled me, too, when I got my 84 C27. The transmission dipstick looks like a bolt...it's found on the top of the transmission housing, and is easily removed with a socket or wrench. The manual specifies checking the level with the dipstick merely inserted, NOT screwed all the way in. After checking screw down the bolt all the way. The drain hole is supposed to be on the bottom, but on my boat I can't get to it. I simply drain from the dipstick hole with a hand vacuum pump, then refill. The fuel filter on the M-18 is a spin on, like some oil filters are. You can obtain one from a Universal dealer, or online at Torresen's diesel site. This engine is a Kubota block converted to marine use, so a proper, matching Kubota filter will fit, too. My boat has a Racor primary filter installed ahead of the spin on filter. The Racor stops virtually everything from getting to the spin on, but I change both of them annually anyway. I think installing a Racor is a good investment. Good luck with your boat. Randy

Randy : On your C27..

how did you access this bolt/dip stick ? from the port locker or can it be reached from the Starboard panal in the cabin? Thanks to you and to JeffW!

Access is from the quarter berth

Access is from the quarter berth. Mine has an access door, and it's relatively easy to reach it. Randy
