1984 Catalina 27. My engine was running fine, I smelled burning so I shut it down. There was some smoke in the engine compartment. Got a tow to the dock. At the dock I tried to start it and nothing, no power to the control panel. I noticed the wire in the photo was burned. Any ideas what caused this ?

over-current or a short. And the green ground wire indicates serious corrosion. Consider yourself very lucky.
when was the last time you inspected all wires, insulation and connections?

Corroded wire will have increased resistance which will cause over heating and potentially a fire. It appears that all the insulation on that wire has burned off. You are lucky your boat is still afloat. The entire wiring system needs to inspected and repaired by a competent marine electrician.

Fixed with the help of some awesome people !! It was an electrical short due to chaffed wires. Replaced the wires and all is well.
