I have a 1984 Catalina 27 with a Universal M-18 diesal engine. I've had the boat 20 years and rarely ever had problems with the engine. It is only fresh water sailed and the engine has low usage. Starting this season I'm getting some exhaust coming through the Breather Hose which attaches from the value cover to the air intake filter. The engine is getting harder to start but I don't know if that is related or not. Once the engine is running, it runs just fine (except for the smoke down below).
Any suggestions on what is wrong, knowing little about this I'm assuming it is possibly restriction in exhaust flow or valves not seating. I'll take any advice, the boat is not where a mechanic is readily available so I don't want to start taking things apart unless I've a good idea what is really wrong.
