Universal M-18 Engine

I have a catalina 27 with a frozen Universal M-18 engine. Probably water entered through the exhaust system after repeated attempts to start the engine. Does anyone have an idea of the relative costs of rebuild Vs new and engine removal / replacement.

Frozen or hydrolocked

Are you sure the engine is frozen/seized, or is it just hydrolocked due to water in the cylinders? I'm not an expert on this, but I've heard stories of people disassembling hydrolocked engines, cleaning, lubricating, and reassembling them in working order. If yours has only had water in it for a short period of time, it may be salvageable without a complete rebuild. A good diesel mechanic should be able to help. Perhaps others can provide more advice, too.Randy
