I just bought a 1987 Catalina 27. The engine manual states that shut down is done by pulling back from idle against a spring load to kill the power. My throttle doesn't go back past idle. I shut down by pulling the handle located by the engine instruments. Is this common?

YES

I think the older models worked that way. My 86 uses the "T" handle on the instrument panel. Pull the handle, after the motor stops, listen for the oil pressure buzzer to sound, then turn off the key.

M-18 Shut Down

I have a 1988 C-30 with a M-18 that the shut down procedure is the same as Don describes. Pull t-handle to stop engine, then turn off key.
