Hello all. The boat was launched today.
Much more to be done. As this is my third season with a boat, I still have a lot to learn. One thing I'm learning that's not mentioned here is about cars. My boat is about 2 hrs away and you can only cram so much stuff in a Pontiac Vibe or Jeep. I may have to buy a van. I guess that is part of the expense.
Anyway, my raw water pump has a small drip behind it. The marina says I should think about replacing it soon. The engine is a Universal 5424. The boat a 1982 34' O'day. I stopped at a local marine store, not the big WM. He made a phone call and the price was $529. Ok I told him, I'll think about it. I have an Oberdorfer pump. I then checked with Torresen. About the same price. But, the pump is totally different. (Shaft different. Won't fit at all), I got a parts list from Torresen when I bought the boat, but they send me a manual for the M4-30. Same engine they say. But the pump is a Sherwood. Anyway, I did find the right pump for $230.
Now. Can I assume that some boat engines had big changes during production and nobody cared about tracking changes? I have the original operations manual that came with the boat and has a pic of my pump. But all 5424 part list I see show the different pump that won't fit. Would I have been stuck with a $500 pump that won't work because my 5424 has an entirely different pump? One web site had a title "UNIVERSAL ATOMIC DIESEL PARTS LIST". Parts listed included cap, rotor, condenser, spark plugs, wires. 30 years in the automotive field and I've never seen a gas & diesel engine. Do I have to remove the engine and carry it to the store to show them the part I need and which model 5424 I have? Well, its late, this is getting long, so many thanks for all your help and wisdom.
