just a bit of info for universal diesel owners. i use tractors in my business and last year learned that the kabota tractor motor is the universal diesel. my diesel took a dump and instead of a marine dealer i took it to my tractor mechanic. saved about half for the estimate i recieved from a marine engine mechanic. next time look for a kabota dealer.

Diesels

My dad is looking at a catalina 30. It is about a 1980 and has the old 11 h.p. engine. The only red flag so far is that we are told that if left at idle, the crank case has to be drained every so often because it fill with diesel. We are also told that this is normal. Is that believable at all?

Try Ford

I don't know what the relationship is between Ford and Kabota, but here in Sacramento, the Ford tractor dealer handles Kabota, so if you can't find Kabota, try looking for a Ford tractor dealer. Kabota parts are cheaper as well.

Univeral 5411

Chris,Sounds fishy to me. The 5411's are notorious for blowing head gaskets. Unless someone is literally giving you the boat, I would look for another 30 with a big diesel. You will not be happy with a 5411. Bigger is better.
