I have a Universal diesel 16 HP. The raw water pump needs to be rebuilt this winter. Is this something I can do easily with a rebuild kit or should I bring it to the mechanic? I do all other engine maintenance myself.
Hey Larry,If you do all the rest of the work you can handle this. If it is like my 18hp. universal there is really nothing to rebuild, you just replace the impeller, only one e-clip holds it on the shaft. It is a tiny one that you might fight a little but not a real problem. I had a friend push against the clip while I squished the impeller. Go for it.Dean
If the only problem is the impeller, Dean is right. If, like mine did, it's leaking water from the shaft seal, it might be cheaper to replace and keep the leaky one as a spare for emergency use (as long as the leak isn't too great). I may be wrong, but I don't think re-building for a shaft leak is a do-it-yourselfer job. If it's only the impeller that needs replacing, whatever you do, don't remove the shaft from the pump body. Doing so can (or will) create a shaft leak.
If you have a Sherwood pump with 6 screws that hold on the cover plate, then I would not recommend doing it yourself. It requires a seal extractor and seal press. I replaced mine with an Oberderforer and IMHO, is a better made pump and easier to work on. I ordered the new pump thru my local Universal dealer, but when it came in, it was in a box from Depco Pump Co. You might want to contact them at www.depcopump.com
