Does anyone have any recommendations for a do it yourself maintenance / repair manual for Universal diesel engines? ( Mine is the M-18). I have the Universal owners manual but it is a little short on helpful hints and procedures for actually doing the work. Thanks for any help. Richard

Thanks Stu but I have the Universal service

manual and it is geared more towards rebuilding an engine. I just want help with how to diagnose problems and change out things like water pumps and thermostats and the like, and pointers about what kinds of problems I might run into while doing those things. More like some of the service manuals I have seen for indoard/outboard type power boats. Thanks again for your taking the time to reply!

That kind of information you seek is generally ...

handed down from one good friend to another. And generally those horror stories seem to be unique to the boat and the other factors like day of the week and need to get something repaired fast ... and how corroded certain components are ... and who added another accessory blocking the thing you have to fix ... and why you can't find the special little tools someone has to invent to make a repair after the engine was installed. I had a water pump on the universal M12 with a key that locked the impellor to the shaft ... I was told that the new key was the "right" key but it disintegrated in 8 months when I replaced the impellor ... so I thought since the seals were starting to go I would order a replacement waterpump ... and went through a real hassle to get spare keys ... but guess what ... they don't use that exact model pump anymore so the new replacement pump uses a flat section on the shaft and eliminates the need for a key. But no one at universal seemed to know what it was all about till i opened up the new pump and found out the shaft connection to the impellor and the impellor are different from the original. I now use a laundry marker to note these things on the part so when I try to do the maintenance a couple of years from now I will have a hint of what to do. never mind simply ordering an impellor for an M12 Universal ... you have to know things like the "new" or the "old" water pump. Dig a little deeper

Steve: I can't get the related link that Stu provided open so I'm only guessing that it was Universal's web. I have an M25 and have found information that you are describing. They have an on-line shop manual and a separate on-line user's manual. I've found information on valve adjustment, fuel injector timing adjustment, water pump replacement, etc. and printed them out for future use. Their site is a little confusing sometimes, but I believe that if you dig a little deeper, you might find what your looking for. I've done business with them before and on occasions called them on the phone they have always been extremely helpful. Good luck with it!

The link is:

http://www.marinedieseldirect.com/ They're down for maintenance of their website now (11:00 pm California time), but should be back. I think their old website design was a lot better and easier to use. Turn back the hands of time??????

That figures

Haven't been there in a while, fortunately, I don't have any problems. Just about the time I figure out how to use a web site, some smart alec changes it around and I have to start all over again.
